Shareholder Handbook
Thank you for being an Iron Ox Farm CSA shareholder! Here is some important information that will make your CSA membership a safe and enjoyable experience for you and everyone else on the farm.
WHAT TO DO
-
Visit our Pickups page for all the details
-
When you arrive at the farm, park in the designated parking area right as you pull into the farm. You may be greeted by the welcoming crew β our working farm dogs that all love to bark but are very friendly and loving! Please show them love and respect!
-
Please bring a bag or bags to accommodate your veggies. We will have extra paper bags if you forget your own β just ask! When there is pick-your-own itβs best to bring your own clippers/scissors handy for herb cutting in case the ones we provide are all being used.
-
You will pick up your share under a tent next to the farm stand. Look for a podium with our check-in sheets and mark yourself off for the week. There will always be one or two crew members around to help and to answer questions.
-
Inside the share tent, vegetables will be displayed on tables with little signs telling you whatβs what and how much to take of each item. Please note our share is NOT free choice. We grow specific amounts of veggies just for our CSA. Giving free choice is too challenging for us at the moment and would lead to potential waste that we would like to avoid. If you have an allergy or strong aversion to a specific veggie we would be happy to swap it for something else but please ask first just to be sure we have enough of everything to go around. Be sure to grab your veggies from the CSA tent and not from the farmstand. We will be around and keeping an eye to make sure we donβt run out of anything but if you notice we need to restock please find us and weβll get right on it!
-
If you know that you are going to miss a pickup, let us know before the share pickup has ended and we will pack a share for you and leave it in the cooler with your name on it. If youβre going on vacation, feel free to have somebody else pick up your share for you β you donβt need to tell us, just let your friend know to give us your name when they check in. If you donβt come for your share and we havenβt heard from you by 12:30 pm on Saturday we will not be able to fill your share for that week. We hate to draw a hard line here but many, many man hours go into harvesting, cleaning, packing, maintaining, and manning the share pickup. With so much work to do each and every day of the week, it is impossible for us to spend hours the next day putting together shares for people who didnβt come during the 2 pickup times allotted.
-
When PYO is available, a chalkboard in the share tent will let you know which crops are open and the amount of each that can be harvested per share. Full and Half shares both get the same amount of PYO items.
Please bring your own tools and bags for harvesting from the PYO. Beds that are open for picking will be marked with signs at the beginning of the bed. We wait to open some crops, such as herbs, until the plants are big enough for everyone to get some. Even though sometimes it may look like a crop is ready, please donβt pick from it unless it has a sign. Throughout the season, we plant many successions in the PYO garden. Please be careful (and make sure your kids are careful) of beds with ungerminated seeds or baby seedlings. Please only walk in pathways between beds even if youβre sure that there is nothing planted. If there is bad weather we have the right to close the PYO for the safety of people and plants.
PYO flowers are not guaranteed to be in the Veggie CSA. We will include flowers only when we are sure that there is enough to satisfy the PYO Flower shareholders first.
-
All of our crops are grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. This does not mean we recommend eating them without washing them first. We rinse all produce to remove most of the loose dirt, but please donβt stop there. We have wildlife nearby, birds poop as they fly overhead...you get the picture. So wash your veggies.
Important things to be aware of
Iron Ox Farm is a working farm. Please be cautious around machinery and electric fencing. When the PYO garden is open the electric fence will be turned off. Otherwise assume all electric fencing is on for caution. Maintaining a safe and mutually beneficial relationship between the CSA and the farm crew is critical for our success. So here are the rulesβ¦
-
We ask that unless accompanied by a farmer, shareholders do not leave the areas of the farm used by the CSA and farm stand. These are the parking area, share tent, road to the PYO and PYO garden and surrounding areas. If you have any questions, or want to see another part of the property, donβt hesitate to ask.
-
Please donβt bring them. We love dogs, too, but we have our own dogs, little kids and a roadway.
-
Weβd love to show you around. Just donβt go in there unaccompanied. Please ask.
-
One of our favorite things about CSA and especially PYO is that it gets kids involved in food. Please make sure that your children are close by at all times and understand that a farm can be a dangerous place. When youβre picking up your share, if youβd like to include your child in making choices please be aware and courteous of your fellow shareholders. Sometimes it gets very busy and a line might form behind a family that is moving more slowly β so stay aware and let others go ahead if necessary. Itβs important to make sure your child is not standing on the tables where the veggies are displayed. Beyond this being a safety concern with the considerable amount of weight already on the tables, itβs also not sanitary. While theyβre super cute, itβs likely those shoes have been to the grocery store and preschool, and plenty of other places so best to keep off the tables.
-
We do not currently have any facilities available to the public. We are sorry that weβre not yet as well equipped in this regard as weβd like to be.
-
Please be respectful of our neighborsβ property including the usage of their driveway. We ask that everyone always enter the farm through the main entrance where the parking lot is.
